Arctic Cold Front to Sweep Across South Carolina

South Carolina is preparing for a significant Arctic cold front that will sweep across the region, bringing the coldest temperatures of the season. This cold front is set to arrive on Sunday, leading to frigid air settling in by nightfall and persisting through Tuesday.

Impact of the Arctic Cold Front

Residents can expect to wake up Monday morning to some of the coldest conditions seen since last winter. The wind chill will exacerbate the cold, making it feel even chillier than actual air temperatures. The Upstate is forecasted to experience lows in the mid-teens, while coastal areas may see temperatures in the low 20s. Central South Carolina is predicted to register in the upper teens.

Temperature Forecasts

  • Monday Morning Lows: Mid-teens in the Upstate
  • Monday Morning Lows: Low 20s along the coast
  • Central South Carolina: Upper teens

Wind chill values are likely to reduce temperatures by an additional five degrees, causing “feels like” temperatures to dip into the single digits in some areas Monday morning. Despite sunshine on Monday, highs are only expected to reach the 30s across the state.

Weather Precautions

One positive note regarding the Arctic air mass is its dryness, which reduces the likelihood of precipitation, including snow. Temperatures are predicted to plummet to 5-8 degrees below the season’s coldest readings, yet they will stay above record lows.

With this significant drop in temperature, it becomes crucial for residents to prepare effectively. The St. John’s Fire District emphasizes the importance of following the “7 Ps” during this cold snap:

  • People
  • Pets
  • Plants
  • Pipes
  • Pools
  • Protecting vehicles
  • Practicing fire safety

Fire Safety Tips

In light of recent house fires related to heating devices, residents are urged to take precautions. Guidelines include:

  • Keep heaters at least three feet away from flammable materials.
  • Use heaters only in well-ventilated areas.
  • Never leave heaters unattended or running while sleeping.

After Tuesday, temperatures are expected to gradually rise as an upper-level ridge moves into the area, allowing for a more temperate climate leading into the holidays.
