NYC and Tri-State to See First Widespread Snowfall This Weekend

New York City and the Tri-State area are bracing for their first significant snowfall of the season this weekend. A clipper system is expected to bring snow accumulation along the Interstate 95 corridor, affecting regions from Philadelphia to Boston.

Winter Weather Advisory Issued

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for New York City, Long Island, and parts of New Jersey. This advisory will take effect from Saturday night through early Sunday morning.

Snowfall Expectations

Snow is anticipated to develop late Saturday, around 10 to 11 p.m., and continue into early Sunday. The forecast predicts average accumulations of:

  • 1-3 inches across the Tri-State area
  • Lighter snowfall north and west of I-287
  • Heavier totals, potentially exceeding 3 inches, south and east of New York City, including Suffolk, Ocean, and Monmouth counties

Motorists should prepare for slippery roads, and travelers should be aware of possible disruptions at airports due to de-icing operations.

City Preparations for Snow

The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) has announced a Snow Alert starting at 7 p.m. Saturday until 2 p.m. Sunday. This marks their first Snow Alert of the season, highlighting increased readiness for winter weather.

In advance of the snowfall, the DSNY commenced highway brining operations on Friday night. Pre-treating the roads with brine helps mitigate snow accumulation and improves safety.

Post-Storm Weather Outlook

Conditions will improve by Sunday afternoon, although temperatures will remain below freezing. High-pressure systems are expected to bring clear, cold weather on Monday, with highs only in the upper 20s to low 30s.

A gradual warming trend is forecasted for the middle of next week. By Thursday, temperatures could approach 50 degrees.
