NFCU Operation Leads to Arrest, Seizes Illegal Bushmeat

On December 5, officers from the National Food Crime Unit (NFCU), in collaboration with the Metropolitan Police, executed a successful operation in Deptford. They seized 38 kilograms of frozen illegal bushmeat, which included critically endangered species such as pangolins, cane rats, and porcupines.

NFCU Operation Targets Illegal Bushmeat

This operation underscores the ongoing efforts to combat the illegal bushmeat trade. The seized bushmeat poses significant food safety risks to consumers. Illegal meat imports do not undergo the thorough safety and hygiene inspections required for food sold within the UK.

Health Risks and Endangered Species

Bushmeat, which consists of meats from wild animals, often carries diseases and contaminants. The presence of critically endangered species, like pangolins, highlights the severe legal and ecological implications of this trade. Internationally, all commercial trade of pangolins is prohibited.

  • Date of Operation: December 5
  • Location: Deptford
  • Amount Seized: 38kg of frozen bushmeat
  • Species Involved: Pangolins, cane rats, porcupines
  • Age of Arrested Individual: 57 years old

Following the operation, the individual arrested was released pending further investigation. Enquiries are currently ongoing. Simon Ashwin, Senior Investigator at the NFCU, stated that this initiative is part of a broader strategy to disrupt the illegal meat trade and safeguard public health.

Consumer Advisory

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) strongly advises the public against purchasing or consuming illegally imported meat, including bushmeat. Such actions may expose individuals to serious health risks. If there are concerns regarding any products for sale, consumers are encouraged to report them to their local authorities.

The NFCU remains dedicated to preventing illegal meat from entering the food supply and will continue to take necessary actions to protect public safety.
