Thüringen: AfD Hits Record High, Surpasses CDU, SPD, and BSW Combined

In Thüringen, the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party has reached an unprecedented milestone in political support. According to a recent survey conducted by the polling firm Insa for Funke Medien Thüringen, the AfD has garnered 39% of voter support, surpassing all other parties in the region.
Current Political Landscape in Thüringen
One year into the term of the coalition government comprising the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the Free Democratic Party (BSW), and the Social Democratic Party (SPD), the coalition finds itself without a parliamentary majority. The combined support for these three parties stands at only 37%, leaving them nine percentage points short of the required majority.
Party Performance and Voter Support
- AfD: 39% – A new record in support.
- CDU: 24% – Consistent with its performance in the 2024 state elections.
- BSW: 7% – A significant drop from 15.8% during the 2024 elections.
- SPD: 6% – No change compared to the 2024 state elections.
- Linke: 14% – Relatively stable, up from 13.1% in 2024.
In the last state elections, the AfD achieved 32.8% of the votes, making it the largest faction in the Erfurt parliament. The CDU, led by Minister President Mario Voigt, holds 24%, closely aligned with its previous election results. The coalition’s support is further weakened by the BSW and SPD’s poor showings.
Legislative Dynamics
The current coalition controls 44 out of the 88 seats in the Thüringen parliament. To manage the political deadlock, they frequently seek assistance from the Linke party. The recent poll was conducted between last Tuesday and this Tuesday, surveying 1,000 residents of Thüringen.
