Bandai Namco CEO Discusses Elden Ring Film and Ace Combat 8

Bandai Namco Entertainment recently announced the highly anticipated game “Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve” during the 2025 Game Awards. This title is set to launch in 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC via Steam. It continues the legacy of the beloved “Ace Combat” franchise, transitioning the narrative between “Ace Combat 7” and “Ace Combat 3.”
Ace Combat 8: Storyline and Gameplay Enhancements
The game places players in the role of a fighter pilot amid chaotic circumstances. As a character adrift at sea, players are rescued by the aging aircraft carrier, Endurance, which is filled with refugees fleeing from the Republic of Sotoa’s invasion of the Federation of Central Usea (FCU). Set in July 2029, the story highlights the shattered military of the FCU and a desperate struggle to reclaim lost stability.
Although the protagonist is given the name “Wings of Theve,” symbolizing hope and valor, this moniker is later revealed to be a mere fabrication for morale. Players must navigate this complex narrative as they fight alongside new comrades to reclaim their homeland.
Graphical and Development Features
CEO Nao Udagawa emphasized the game’s impressive graphical fidelity, particularly in the depiction of skies and weather effects. “The graphics are something that we really pushed for in ‘Ace Combat 8,’” Udagawa stated. Developers have focused on creating stunning visual experiences that enhance the storytelling and gameplay.
- Improved graphic realism of skies and clouds
- Enhanced narrative and cinematic presentation
- Same thrilling gameplay fans expect from the franchise
A new subsidiary, Bandai Namco Aces, has been created to focus exclusively on the “Ace Combat” franchise. This allows for a more rapid development cycle while maintaining the integrity of the game’s quality.
Elden Ring Film Adaptation Insights
Alongside news of “Ace Combat 8,” Udagawa provided updates on the upcoming film adaptation of the hit game “Elden Ring,” in collaboration with A24 and director Alex Garland. Hollywood veteran Peter Rice has joined the project, which is anticipated to appeal to both longtime fans and newcomers to the franchise.
Udagawa stated, “Our primary goal is to ensure that ‘Elden Ring’ fans feel represented and satisfied with the film.” There’s an aim to create a movie that encourages those unfamiliar with the game to explore its rich world.
Project Development Status
- Collaboration with A24 and director Alex Garland
- Focus on fan experience and satisfaction

With “Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve” and the “Elden Ring” film in the pipeline, Bandai Namco continues to innovate and expand its beloved franchises while ensuring quality experiences for fans. Stay tuned for updates and a teaser for “Ace Combat 8.”
