Sky Q Update Announces Significant Change in TV Box Availability

Sky has announced a significant change regarding the availability of its Sky Q TV box. The company, known for its premium broadcasting services, has increasingly shifted its focus toward internet-connected TV products in recent years.
Transition to Streaming Services
Sky Q, which first launched almost ten years ago, is no longer available for online purchase. Instead, Sky has encouraged customers to consider its newer offerings, such as Sky Stream. Customers still have the option to purchase Sky Q through physical stores or phone orders.
- Launch Date of Sky Q: February 2014
- Availability of Sky Q: Continues in retail and by phone
- New Model Releases: Sky Glass has seen two updates since its launch in October 2021
Concerns Over Satellite Box Future
As Sky continues to emphasize streaming solutions, fans of Sky Q express concern that this may signal the end of satellite TV boxes from the company. The current contract with its satellite service provider, SES, is set to expire in 2028. This adds to the unease among Sky Q users about the longevity of their devices.
Sky’s Commitment to Sky Q
Despite these changes, Sky assures its customers that Sky Q is still a viable option. Fraser Stirling, Global Chief Product Officer for Comcast and Sky, noted earlier this year that consumer satisfaction remains high. He emphasized that the company continues to invest in Sky Q. “It’s still a great product,” Stirling stated, highlighting the ongoing support for the platform.
Conclusion
While Sky Q’s online availability may have diminished, the service is not disappearing. As Sky leans more into its streaming services, customers can expect the bulk of future features to cater to the Sky Stream and Sky Glass platforms.
