Notre Dame Athletics Launches New Basketball Leprechaun Logo

The University of Notre Dame’s Athletics Department has introduced a new Basketball Leprechaun logo. This is the third sport-specific Leprechaun design, following the releases for football and hockey earlier this year. The Athletics Department plans to develop more distinctive logos for each sport in which the Fighting Irish compete at the varsity level.

Design and Inspiration

The new Basketball Leprechaun mark was created by Fighting Irish Media. It received considerable input from the men’s and women’s basketball programs. The design draws inspiration from photography, fundamentals, and dribbling styles exhibited by current and former student-athletes.

Historical Context of the Leprechaun Logo

The Fighting Irish Leprechaun logo made its debut on the cover of the November 20, 1964 issue of Time magazine. This edition featured Ara Parseghian, who was in his first year as the head football coach at Notre Dame. The logo has since evolved into a beloved symbol among Irish athletic fans, appearing on various clothing and memorabilia.

Significance of the Leprechaun

  • The Leprechaun serves as a secondary spirit mark for Notre Dame athletics.
  • It embodies the competitive spirit and determination of the Fighting Irish.
  • The logo has been recognized globally as the mascot of Notre Dame athletics since the early 1960s.

Future Releases and Partnerships

Fans can expect additional sport-specific logos to be unveiled during the 2025-26 academic year and beyond. Furthermore, in collaboration with Under Armour, new Fighting Irish athletic apparel featuring the Basketball Leprechaun logo is now available this season.
