Schools Outside London Close as ‘Clipper’ Storm Hits Wednesday Morning

Schools outside of London have been closed due to severe weather conditions caused by an Alberta Clipper storm. This decision affects both public and Catholic schools in the area, which have canceled classes following hazardous travel warnings.

Impact of the Clipper Storm

An estimated 20 centimeters of snow is expected, according to Environment Canada meteorologist Brad Rosseau. The storm began affecting the region early Wednesday morning, leading to multiple road incidents during the busy commute.

  • Area affected: Elgin, Oxford, and Middlesex counties
  • Schools canceled: Public and Catholic schools
  • Snow forecast: Up to 20 cm expected
  • Potential hazards: Ice-covered roads and travel difficulties

Travel Warnings and Road Conditions

Ontario Provincial Police reported numerous collisions on highways 401 and 402. In Oxford County, the eastbound lanes were shut down overnight due to snow accumulation. Travelers are urged to exercise caution.

Sgt. Ed Sanchuck from the Ontario Provincial Police emphasized, “We have snow-covered roads that are ice-covered and slippery.” Commuters should maintain safe distances from other vehicles and reduce speed.

In London, busy routes like Wonderland Road experienced significant disruptions, with all westbound lanes closed after a tractor-trailer accident. Police were also present on Veterans Memorial Parkway responding to similar incidents.

Continued Weather Challenges

As the storm progresses, meteorologists forecast that cooler air will settle over the Great Lakes, likely resulting in additional snow squalls starting Wednesday night. This pattern may continue into Thursday, causing persistent winter weather challenges.

Residents are advised to prepare for continued harsh conditions, particularly if traveling is necessary. Staying informed about local weather updates is crucial during this period.
