UVic Ranks Among Canada’s Top 20 Research Universities for 2024

The University of Victoria (UVic) has made significant strides in research, securing its place among Canada’s top research institutions. In the recently issued rankings by Research Infosource Inc., UVic ranks 18th for 2024, a two-position rise from the previous year.
2024 Research Rankings Overview
This ranking emphasizes the competitive nature of research funding in Canada. UVic achieved a sponsored research income of $168 million in 2024, marking a 20.3% increase from 2023. This income consists of funds received through grants, contracts, or contributions from external sources dedicated to supporting research initiatives.
Faculty Research Intensity
Celebrated for its faculty research intensity, UVic emerged as the top university in the comprehensive category, boasting an impressive $215,900 in research income per faculty member. This figure reflects an overall rise of 2.9% in faculty research intensity across all participating institutions.
Government Funding Trends
- Total government funding across Canada rose by 3%, amounting to $6.21 billion in fiscal 2024.
- Non-government funding for research increased by 7.8%, reaching $3.85 billion.
Comparative Rankings in Canada
Leading the national rankings, the University of Toronto secured the first position, followed by Université de Montréal and McGill University. In British Columbia, the University of British Columbia ranked fourth, while UVic stands at 18th. Other institutions in this region include:
