The Campbell Centre for the Study of Animal Welfare (CCSAW) at the University of Guelph has appointed Dr. Derek Haley as the new director, effective November 1, 2025. He takes over a role that has pivotal importance in advancing animal welfare studies.

Dr. Derek Haley’s Background

Dr. Haley is currently a faculty member in the Department of Population Medicine at the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC). He possesses extensive knowledge in livestock behavior and welfare, gained from years of involvement with CCSAW. His past roles include serving on the Centre’s steering committee and mentoring students engaged in animal welfare research.

A Leader in Animal Welfare

Dr. Jeffrey Wichtel, the dean of OVC, praised Dr. Haley’s well-established reputation in the field. “His appointment reflects not only his expertise in animal behavior and livestock systems but also his commitment to collaborative efforts that enhance animal welfare,” Wichtel noted.

Dr. Haley’s research chiefly addresses issues related to beef and dairy cattle. Key areas of focus include:

  • Effects of long-distance transportation
  • Weaning stress
  • Welfare of culled dairy cows

Before his tenure at OVC, Dr. Haley worked as a provincial livestock welfare specialist with Alberta Agriculture. He contributed to advancing animal welfare across several provinces and has collaborated with a variety of stakeholders, including producers, veterinarians, and policymakers, throughout Canada. His fluency in French enhances his ability to engage with diverse communities.

CCSAW’s Mission

Established over 35 years ago, CCSAW stands as one of the largest animal welfare centres in the world. The Centre is dedicated to improving animal lives through research, teaching, and outreach, bringing together faculty and students from various disciplines.

“Interest in the welfare of animals, including farm animals, zoo animals, companion pets, and wildlife, is rapidly increasing,” Dr. Haley remarked. He expressed his honor in leading CCSAW, emphasizing the collaborative environment that unites researchers and academics committed to animal welfare.

Looking Ahead

Dr. Haley’s appointment is set to enhance CCSAW’s standing as a leader in animal welfare science. His vision includes expanding the Centre’s impact on research, education, and policy.

Gratitude is also extended to Dr. Georgia Mason for her contributions to the Centre’s development. She will remain with CCSAW as a core faculty member while continuing her important work in the College of Biological Science’s Department of Integrative Biology.
