Ionia School Principal Found Dead on Campus, Report Confirms

In a somber development, Ionia Public Schools recently confirmed the death of Jason Little, the principal of Douglas R. Welch High School. His body was discovered on campus early Thursday morning, though the cause of death has not yet been disclosed. Local authorities have stated that there is no evidence suggesting any threat to public safety in connection with the incident.

Superintendent Ben Gurk reached out to the district’s families in a recent letter, acknowledging Little’s significant influence. He noted that Little “leaves behind a remarkable legacy, having positively impacted countless students, colleagues, and members of our community.”

School Closures

The unexpected tragedy prompted several closures within the district. On Thursday, Welch High School, Ionia High School, and Bulldog Beginnings Preschool, all situated on the same campus, were closed. Welch High School also remained shut on Friday. To accommodate families and staff wishing to pay their respects, all Ionia Public Schools buildings were closed on Monday, December 8.
