UConn Coach Dan Hurley Anticipates Major Breakthrough for Junior Guard

UConn men’s basketball coach Dan Hurley is optimistic about the upcoming game against the Florida Gators on December 9, following a bitter 75-77 defeat last March. The No. 5 UConn Huskies boast an impressive 8-1 record this season, and Hurley’s focus is on junior guard Solo Ball as a key player for a potential breakthrough performance.
Solo Ball’s Struggles and Expectations
Historically, Solo Ball has been a vital part of UConn’s perimeter offense. Last season, he made 99 three-pointers, maintaining a shooting percentage over 41%. However, this season has seen a notable decline. Ball’s current three-point shooting stands below 30%, with only 17 successful attempts through the first nine games.
Hurley highlighted that Ball is not alone in his struggles. Florida’s players, Boogie Fland and Xavian Lee, are also experiencing difficulties in their shooting averages. Hurley stated, “I think when you’re looking at three-point numbers… you’re just waiting for those numbers to come back closer to the mean.” He anticipates that Ball will rise to the challenge and regain his form during crucial matchups.
Defensive Improvements Strengthen UConn
While UConn’s offense has been inconsistent, their defense has emerged as a strong asset. The team is allowing only 60.4 points per game and ranks in the top 20 nationwide for field-goal defense at 37.4%. Furthermore, their three-point defense is at an impressive 26.8%, and they generate nearly 14 turnovers per game.
Silas Demary Jr. has been instrumental in enhancing the team’s defensive capabilities. He consistently records steals and rebounds, contributing significantly to UConn’s defensive statistics. Hurley noted, “The biggest area that has allowed our team to be successful this year is the defensive improvement of the team.”
The Upcoming Matchup
The game at Madison Square Garden, a venue where Hurley holds a record of 16-8, promises to be an intense affair. UConn’s improved defense is expected to face a challenge from Florida’s aggressive perimeter play. Fland averages 12.5 points per game, while Lee contributes 8.4 points and 4.8 rebounds.

With both teams struggling to find their shooting rhythm, the match is set to test UConn’s defensive strategies. If he succeeds, UConn’s potential for victory increases significantly.
