OpenAI Denies Users’ Claims of Ads on ChatGPT

The discussion around potential advertising on ChatGPT has recently intensified among its users. Concerns emerged after screenshots suggesting ads appeared in the ChatGPT interface spread across social media. However, OpenAI has publicly refuted these claims.

OpenAI Responds to Advertising Allegations

Nick Turley, the head of ChatGPT at OpenAI, addressed the situation on X, clarifying the misunderstanding. He stated that there are currently no live tests for ads on the platform. Turley emphasized, “Any screenshots you’ve seen are either not real or not ads.” He reassured users that the company values their trust and would approach any potential advertising thoughtfully.

User Concerns and Misinterpretations

The rumor originated when a user, Benjamin De Kraker, shared a screenshot depicting what he interpreted as an advertisement for Target while using ChatGPT. His frustration was evident as he expressed his disappointment, urging the company to reconsider such practices. In his post, he asked if this was a feature that could be disabled.

Experts suggest that the link to Target in the screenshot is likely tied to a new shopping feature, rather than direct advertising. OpenAI had previously announced steps towards “agentic commerce” in late September. This initiative allows users to interact with AI agents and businesses to facilitate shopping experiences.

OpenAI’s plans for any advertising are currently on hold due to recent competitive developments. Following the successful launch of Google’s Gemini 3, CEO Sam Altman indicated an internal shift in focus. He described a “code red” situation, prioritizing resources for ChatGPT over other upcoming products, including advertising.
