Three UK Shuts Down 3G Sites Amid 4G and 5G Expansion

Mobile operator Three UK has announced the complete shutdown of its 3G network as of the end of November 2025. This move is part of the company’s transition toward enhanced 4G and 5G services.
Transitioning from 3G to Modern Networks
Three UK’s decision comes after previously confirming that the majority of their 3G sites had already been decommissioned. Only a few sites remained active to avoid disrupting customer service. The final phase of this transition was completed at the end of November 2025.
Benefits of the 3G Shutdown
The removal of the 3G network has allowed Three UK to free up valuable radio spectrum. This spectrum can now be reallocated to improve 4G and 5G mobile broadband performance and coverage. In addition to enhanced service, operators are also experiencing significant cost and energy savings by discontinuing support for the obsolete 3G technology.
Industry-Wide Shift
The UK government, alongside major mobile operators, has set a target to phase out 2G and 3G signals completely by 2033. Currently, Three UK is one of the leading operators in this transition, with only O2 yet to finalize its 3G services. O2 is expected to complete this process by the close of 2025, focusing on areas like Scotland first.
Future Plans for Network Efficiency
VodafoneThree oversees Three UK’s operations, which include a total of 16,000 network masts. Out of these, only 3,000 were exclusively 3G. The shut down of these 3G towers involved upgrading them to support both 4G and 5G technologies. Notably, many masts also received Multi-Operator Core Network software upgrades, facilitating seamless service for Vodafone customers as part of VodafoneThree’s efforts to build a superior network in the UK.
A Seamless Transition for Customers
This systematic upgrade process was executed alongside improvements to Three’s core network. As a result, customer service disruptions were minimized, including for those using Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) like SMARTY and international visitors roaming on Three’s services.
Conclusion
The complete shutdown of 3G by Three UK marks a significant step in the modernization of mobile networks in the UK, paving the way for enhanced connectivity through 4G and 5G technologies.
