Ilhan Omar Criticizes FBI Over Alleged Somali Fraud-Terrorism Link

Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar has criticized the FBI over suggested links between fraud allegations involving the Somali community and global terrorism. These comments come amid rising scrutiny of a major fraud investigation in Minnesota, where perpetrators allegedly exploited pandemic relief programs.
Background of the Fraud Investigation
In 2022, federal prosecutors in Minnesota announced charges related to what has been characterized as the “largest pandemic fraud in the United States.” This scheme primarily revolved around a welfare initiative partnering with the Minnesota Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, distributing meals meant for children.
Recently, the U.S. Treasury Department initiated an investigation into whether public assistance funds from Minnesota were misappropriated and funneled to al Qaeda’s affiliate in Somalia, al Shabaab. Concurrently, House Republicans on the Oversight Committee are probing the actions of Democratic Governor Tim Walz regarding the handling of these fraud cases.
Ilhan Omar’s Stance
During an appearance on “Face the Nation,” Omar emphasized that if there were legitimate connections between the alleged fraud and terrorism, it would represent a serious failure on the part of law enforcement. She expressed confidence that such a link does not exist, citing previous prosecutions related to the fraud.
- Omar stated, “If there was a linkage in the money that they have stolen going to terrorism, then that is a failure of the FBI.”
- She also remarked on the longstanding nature of these accusations, saying, “If money from U.S. tax dollars is being sent to help with terrorism in Somalia, we want to know.”
Omar highlights that many within the Somali-American community share her frustration, as they too pay taxes and feel impacted by any fraudulent activity. She described the situation as disappointing, noting, “We also could have benefited from the program and the money that was stolen.”
Political Reactions
President Biden has faced backlash for his remarks blaming the Somali community for the fraud. His comments were labeled “disgusting” by Omar, who has called attention to the negative impact of such rhetoric. She voiced concern that the president’s comments could incite harmful actions from those who hear them.
Response from Treasury Secretary
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent discussed ongoing efforts to trace the funds alleged to be linked to this fraud, mentioning that money traced to those charged has reportedly moved overseas, including destinations in the Middle East and Somalia. Omar, however, denied knowledge of these claims and asserted that her past actions demonstrated her commitment to investigating fraud within the program.
The situation continues to evolve, with ongoing investigations and strong reactions from community leaders and political figures alike. As Minnesota’s Somali population is the largest in the U.S., the implications of these allegations resonate deeply within the community.
