Overnight Power Outages Hit Colwood, Langford, Saanich, and Sooke on Dec 6

Severe overnight power outages affected several areas on Vancouver Island, specifically Colwood, Langford, Saanich, and Sooke, on December 6, 2025. The outages began just before 3 PM on December 5 and continued into the early hours of Saturday. By 1 AM, over 9,000 BC Hydro customers were reported to be without electricity.
Areas Impacted by Power Outages
- Colwood and Langford: A significant number of outages were reported, with 6,636 customers affected in the Glen Lake, Luxton, Happy Valley, and Latoria areas.
- Saanich: The Hillside and Oaklands neighborhoods saw 1,087 customers lose power.
- Sooke: Approximately 1,156 customers experienced outages in various locations.
Causes and Weather Conditions
The primary cause of these outages has been attributed to trees falling across power lines. According to BC Hydro, some cases are still under investigation. Weather conditions included strong winds, with gusts reaching up to 80 km/h near the Juan de Fuca Strait. The forecast predicted a low of 9°C and a high of 11°C for the area.
Response Efforts
BC Hydro crews were deployed to address the outages, with about half of the affected areas receiving immediate attention. The majority of the outages began at 10:09 PM on Friday night, with restoration efforts continuing into Saturday morning.
