India’s air travel chaos continues as IndiGo is facing significant operational challenges, leading to the cancellation of over 1,000 flights. These issues particularly affected flights from New Delhi, with the government stepping in to help the airline cope.

IndiGo’s Operational Crisis: Overview

IndiGo, the largest airline in India, acknowledged its failure to prepare adequately for new regulations that took effect on November 1. As air travel typically heightens in December, the restrictions on pilot working hours have created considerable disruption.

Flight Cancellations and Impact

Reports indicate that various airports have seen thousands of passengers stranded due to the cancellations. On Friday alone, IndiGo canceled:

  • 235 flights in New Delhi
  • 165 flights in Mumbai
  • 102 flights in Bengaluru
  • 92 flights in Hyderabad

In a recent statement, IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers expressed his regret for the disruptions. He specified that restoring normal operations might take until between December 10 and December 15. Furthermore, he indicated that a gradual improvement in services could begin as early as Saturday.

Government Response and Regulatory Changes

In response to the crisis, India’s civil aviation authorities granted IndiGo a temporary exemption from some new regulations. Although the airline can now operate with relaxed constraints on pilot duties, the new rule mandating 48 hours of rest per week remains in place.

These pilot duty regulations previously allowed up to six night-time landings weekly. Under the relaxed provisions, pilots may only make two such landings until February 10. The aviation regulator has appealed to pilots for cooperation to manage these changes effectively.

Passenger Reactions and Airline’s Next Steps

The situation at airports has escalated, with frustrated passengers expressing their anger on social media and staging protests. Videos of long lines and distressed families, including children waiting for flights, have captured widespread attention.

IndiGo’s shares saw a 9% drop over the week, signaling investor concerns over the operational crisis. The opposition party in India has raised calls for parliamentary discussions regarding the disruptions.

Customer Assistance Measures

To assist affected travelers, IndiGo announced waivers on cancellations and booking alterations for flights between December 5 and December 15. The airline is also providing ground transportation and hotel accommodations for those impacted.

As the airline navigates these challenges, it remains crucial for IndiGo to restore passenger trust and ensure smooth operations in the coming weeks.
