Colorado Honors with Half-Staff Flags on Thursday, Friday, Saturday

Flags across Colorado will be flown at half-staff on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday to honor the lives of two individuals who made significant contributions to the state. Governor Jared Polis announced this decision, following a directive from President Donald Trump.

Honoring Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom

The flags will be lowered first on Thursday, in remembrance of Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom. The 20-year-old member of the West Virginia National Guard was tragically killed during an ambush while on duty in Washington, D.C. Two National Guard members were shot in this incident, and Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe sustained serious injuries.

  • Victim: Sarah Beckstrom, 20
  • Location of Incident: Washington, D.C.
  • Injured Individual: Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe
  • Governor’s Response: West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey called the act a “terrible act of terrorism.”

The suspect involved in the shooting was shot by another National Guard member and is currently hospitalized and in custody.

Remembering State Sen. Faith Winter

On Friday, flags will again be lowered, this time to pay tribute to State Senator Faith Winter, who passed away in a car crash last week. Governor Polis stated the flags will remain at half-staff until the end of Saturday.

A funeral service for Senator Winter is scheduled to take place outside the Colorado State Capitol on Friday afternoon. In a heartfelt statement, Governor Polis praised Winter, saying:

“Faith was a steady, compassionate, and fierce advocate for all families in Colorado.”

Contributions to Colorado

Senator Winter was recognized for her dedication to improving the lives of Coloradans, particularly through her advocacy for women and families. Her commitment to environmental issues further solidified her legacy in the Colorado General Assembly.

Governor Polis ordered flags to be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Friday, December 5, 2025. This acknowledgment of her service reflects the state’s gratitude for her relentless efforts in the pursuit of progress.
