Britain Braced for Freezing Fog Ahead of Nine-Hour Rainstorm Forecast

The United Kingdom is preparing for adverse weather conditions over the upcoming weekend. A significant nine-hour rainstorm is expected, accompanied by freezing fog in certain regions. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for parts of southeast England starting Thursday night.

Freezing Fog and Heavy Rain Forecast

Visibility in southeast England may drop below 100 meters due to the developing fog. Icy patches could form on untreated surfaces before clearing by Friday morning. Areas affected include:

  • East Sussex
  • Kent
  • Surrey
  • West Sussex

Windy Conditions Expected

Friday morning will see an increase in rainfall, coupled with strong winds sweeping in from the southwest. The rain is anticipated to spread across the UK throughout the day.

Regions further north may experience up to 50mm of rain, while eastern Scotland could receive even more. Coastal areas may encounter gale-force winds exceeding 50mph, leading the Met Office to warn of potential travel disruptions and flooding.

Expert Insights

Matthew Lehnert, the chief meteorologist at the Met Office, commented on the situation. He stated, “Following a chilly start with a chance of ice and fog in southeast England, wind and rain will affect the UK on Friday. Expect an unpleasant evening rush hour, so allow extra travel time.”

Lehnert emphasized that the heaviest rainfall, estimated at 20 to 30mm, will occur over high ground in regions such as:

  • South Wales
  • Southwest England
  • Cumbria
  • Southwest Scotland
  • Northern Ireland

Due to the already saturated conditions, additional rain could result in localized flooding, particularly in western regions.

Weekend Weather Outlook

On Sunday, another band of rain will move northeast across the country. However, significant accumulations are less likely in any specific area.

UK Five-Day Forecast

Day Weather Condition
Thursday Night Showers fading; fog and frost developing.
Friday Persistent rain with strengthening winds.
Saturday Brighter with blustery showers.
Sunday Return of rain, but less significant accumulations expected.
Monday Settling down with sunny spells before more rain arrives in the evening.

Residents are encouraged to prepare for challenging weather conditions and to keep updated with forecasts from the Met Office.
