New Measles Case Identified in Quebec

Quebec has reported a new case of measles in the greater Montreal area. The individual was present at the UP Pediatric Emergency Center in Saint-Eustache on November 28, between 3:30 PM and 8:10 PM. Currently, Quebec has only one confirmed case of measles.

Recent Measles Outbreaks in Quebec

This province has experienced two outbreaks since February 2024, with the latest one concluding in April 2025. Despite the single case in Quebec, measles cases are surging in other provinces across Canada.

  • Ontario has reported nearly 2,400 infections this year.
  • Alberta has close to 1,970 cases during the same period.
  • Between November 16 and 22, Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan reported 40 new measles cases.

Understanding Measles Symptoms

Measles is highly contagious and presents several symptoms. Initial signs include fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. A characteristic rash, appearing as red spots and irregular patches, typically emerges three to seven days after the onset of symptoms.

How to Respond to Possible Measles Symptoms

The CHU Sainte-Justine Hospital in Montreal has advised individuals displaying measles symptoms or suspecting they are infected to refrain from visiting emergency rooms or clinics without prior notice. They emphasize the importance of calling ahead.

  • Notify staff in advance to ensure proper preparations.
  • Upon arrival, immediately inform the reception or admission staff and wear a mask.
