US Establishes Attack Drone Squadron in Middle East from Iranian Design

The US military is launching its first one-way attack drone squadron in the Middle East in response to ongoing drone assaults from Iran and its proxies. The new squadron will operate under Task Force Scorpion Strike, a group recently formed by US Central Command (CENTCOM). It will utilize drones called Low-cost Unmanned Combat Attack System (LUCAS) drones.
Development of LUCAS Drones
The LUCAS drones are based on technology from Iran’s Shahed drones, which the US captured years ago. Developers reverse-engineered the Shahed design to create LUCAS. These drones have been used by Russia in its operations in Ukraine.
Features of LUCAS Drones
According to CENTCOM, the LUCAS drones are capable of operating autonomously and have significant operational range. The drones can be launched using various methods, including:
- Catapults
- Rocket-assisted takeoff
- Mobile ground and vehicle systems
Military Context and Recent Events
The exact location of the drone squadron in the Middle East has not been disclosed. Recent months have seen the US military intensifying its drone capabilities amid increased drone warfare in the region, particularly following increases in attacks by Iran and its proxies.
Significantly, the US faced a series of assaults on its bases after the October 7, 2023, invasion of Israel by Hamas. Notably, an attack on a US outpost in Jordan resulted in the deaths of three service members. In addition, the Iran-backed Houthis have targeted commercial shipping in the Red Sea with drone and missile attacks.
Operational Challenges
In 2024, Iran launched approximately 170 drones and over 120 ballistic missiles toward Israel, with most being intercepted. US forces successfully downed 70 drones and three ballistic missiles during a single night of engagement, earning Silver Stars for two airmen for their roles.
A defense official acknowledged that the US focus on larger precision systems has created disadvantages against cheaper threats like Iranian drones. However, they emphasized a shift in strategy, stating, “But now we’re flipping the script.”
Cost and Future Plans
The official did not disclose the exact number of drones in the new squadron but mentioned that there are “many” with plans for further additions. Each LUCAS drone costs around $35,000, making them relatively affordable compared to traditional US weaponry.
The damaged Shahed drone that the US captured served as the basis for reverse engineering efforts by various US companies to develop the LUCAS design. Task Force Scorpion Strike consists of nearly two dozen personnel, primarily from Special Operations Command – Central.
Admiral Brad Cooper, CENTCOM commander, stated that this innovative task force aims to enhance deterrent capabilities in the region.
