JCPS Suggests New Start Times for 2026-27 School Year

Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) is considering changes to its school start times for the 2026-27 academic year. The proposal, initiated by Superintendent Dr. Brian Yearwood, aims to move the beginning times 20 minutes earlier. This change is part of a broader strategy to enhance school operations and manage budget constraints.

Proposed Changes to School Start Times

As confirmed by JCPS spokesperson Carolyn Callahan, the recommendation will be discussed during a board meeting scheduled for December 9. Currently, JCPS has three different start times:

  • 7:30 a.m.
  • 8:40 a.m.
  • 9:40 a.m.

The proposed new times will be:

  • 7:10 a.m.
  • 8:20 a.m.
  • 9:20 a.m.

This adjustment reflects feedback from school principals and staff who have emphasized the importance of this issue. By aligning start times more closely, JCPS hopes to foster a more cohesive schedule across the district.

Context of the Proposal

In conjunction with the proposed start time adjustments, JCPS is also planning significant changes to its school infrastructure. The district recently announced plans to close, consolidate, and relocate several schools. This decision comes as part of an effort to meet budget cuts exceeding $100 million.

The upcoming board meeting on December 9 will not only address the potential shift in school start times but also review the recommendations for school closures and relocations. These discussions are critical for shaping the future of education in Jefferson County.

As the proposal develops, stakeholders will be closely monitoring the outcomes motivated by both student and community needs.
