British Independent Film Awards Announce 2023 Winners

The British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) recently celebrated its 2023 winners, showcasing remarkable talent and creativity in the sector. The event took place at the Roundhouse in Camden, London, on Sunday evening.
Pillion Wins Top Honors at BIFA 2023
The biker romance film *Pillion*, written and directed by Harry Lighton, won the prestigious best film award. Lighton also secured the title of best debut screenwriter during the ceremony. The film, featuring Harry Melling as Colin and Alexander Skarsgård as Ray, collected a total of four awards, including accolades for best costume design and make-up and hair.
Acting Awards and Notable Performances
- Best Joint Lead Performance: Tom Basden and Tim Key for *The Ballad of Wallis Island*.
- Best Lead Performance: Robert Aramayo for his portrayal of John Davison in *I Swear*.
- Best Supporting Performance: Jay Lycurgo for his role in the drama *Steve*.
- Breakthrough Performance: Posy Sterling for *Lollipop*.
- Best Ensemble Performance: Cast of *Warfare*, including Will Poulter and Kit Connor.
Additional BIFA 2023 Winners
Other notable awards included the inaugural Cinema of the Year, which went to The Magic Lantern Cinema in Tywyn, Wales. The best international independent film award was presented to *Sentimental Value*, directed by Joachim Trier, focusing on family and the power of art.
Akinola Davies Jr was recognized as best director for his debut feature, *My Father’s Shadow*, chronicling a pivotal moment in Nigerian history through the lens of two brothers. The Douglas Hickox Award for best debut director was awarded to Cal McMau for *Wasteman*.
Documentary and Special Awards
In the documentary categories, *A Want In Her*, directed by Myrid Carten, won three BIFAs, including best feature documentary. Emily Watson received the Outstanding Contribution to British Film award for her impressive career in both film and television.
The special jury prize was awarded to Warp Films, recognized for its commitment to telling impactful and relevant stories through film.
Celebrating British Independent Film
Founded in 1998, the BIFAs aim to promote and support British independent filmmaking. The event was hosted by comedians Lou Sanders and Harriet Kemsley, with notable figures like Carey Mulligan and Billy Crudup among the presenters.
