Panthers’ Jalen Coker Honors Late Friend, Hometown with Heartfelt Performance

Jalen Coker, a wide receiver for the Carolina Panthers, recently honored his late friend Adam Oakes through a heartfelt performance in the NFL. This tribute not only commemorates their deep bond but also raises awareness about the risks of hazing among college students.

Remembering Adam Oakes

On a warm August evening in 2020, Jalen Coker shared moments with childhood friends, including Adam Oakes, before entering their college years. As they celebrated their friendship, Coker received a touching message from Adam: “We’re so proud of you.” This moment, filled with camaraderie, would take on a new meaning after Adam tragically passed away in early 2021.

The two friends grew up in Sterling, Virginia, attending the same schools and sharing countless memories. While Coker pursued football at Holy Cross, Adam Oakes was on a different path—one that ended far too soon.

Tragic Loss of a Young Life

On February 21, 2021, Coker received heartbreaking news: Adam had died from alcohol poisoning related to a hazing incident at Virginia Commonwealth University. Adam was found dead after being pressured to consume a fifth of alcohol as part of a fraternity initiation. This devastating loss left Coker and the Oakes family grappling with deep grief and unanswered questions.

The Love Like Adam Foundation

In the wake of this tragedy, the Oakes family established the Love Like Adam Foundation, aiming to combat hazing and educate others about its dangers. This organization has since made significant strides:

  • Creation of “Adam’s Law,” mandating hazing prevention training in Virginia’s colleges.
  • Support for the Stop Campus Hazing Act, a federal initiative passed in December 2024.
  • Production of a documentary titled “Death Of A Pledge: The Adam Oakes Story,” which aired on PBS and won an Emmy.

The foundation also provides scholarships to college students and presents to thousands of students annually to promote awareness and prevention of hazing.

Jalen Coker’s Tribute on the Field

During a recent game at Levi’s Stadium, Coker wore custom cleats adorned with red hearts and the phrase “Love Like Adam,” symbolizing his connection to his late friend. Every moment on the field serves as a tribute to Adam, reminding Coker of his mission to honor his memory through his actions both on and off the field.

“It pushes me to make the most of the time I have,” said Coker, emphasizing the importance of living life fully in Adam’s honor. He continues to keep Adam’s spirit alive with every touchdown, often expressing his gratitude with heart symbols during games.

Continuing the Legacy

Coker frequently communicates with the Oakes family, celebrating his successes with them as a way to acknowledge the bond they shared. The poignant legacy of friendship that began in their youth now drives Coker as he fulfills his aspirations in the NFL.

Through efforts like the Love Like Adam Foundation and Jalen Coker’s dedication to honoring Adam Oakes, the message remains clear: Every life matters, and the mission to prevent hazing is more urgent than ever.
