Chicago Experiences Snowiest November Day on Record, Say Forecasters

Chicago experienced its snowiest November day on record amid a significant winter storm that hit the city. This unprecedented snowfall on Saturday, November 29, 2023, deposited more than 8 inches of snow in various areas, marking a historic event according to the National Weather Service.

Record Snowfall on November 29

The snowstorm resulted in O’Hare International Airport receiving 8.4 inches of snow, while Midway Airport recorded 6 inches. This snow accumulation surpassed the previous Nov. 29 record of 3 inches set in 1942. It also eclipsed the snow totals from November 6, 1951, when 8 inches were measured.

Weather Advisory and Continuing Conditions

The winter weather advisory was extended through noon on Sunday as forecasters warned that snow bands continued to affect the area. Meteorologist Zachary Yak noted that additional snow could further impact already challenging driving conditions.

Impact on Transportation

The storm had a significant effect on travel across the Chicago region. During the storm, nearly 500 car accidents were reported on expressways from 5 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. on Saturday. Illinois State Police responded to:

  • 480 crashes
  • 66 crashes that resulted in injuries

They also provided assistance to approximately 300 motorists who required help during the storm.

Flight Cancellations and Delays

Air travel faced substantial disruptions, with over 1,300 flights canceled at Chicago airports on Saturday. As of Sunday morning, O’Hare reported:

  • 230 flight cancellations
  • Average delays of less than 15 minutes

Midway had 8 cancellations, reflecting the widespread impact of the severe winter weather on both road and air travel.
