Renowned Funeral Director and Community Leader Simon Javizian Dies at 91

Simon Javizian, a renowned funeral director and community leader, passed away on November 23, 2025, in Boca Raton, Florida. He was just weeks shy of his 92nd birthday.

Early Life and Education

Born on December 28, 1933, in Detroit, Michigan, Simon was the son of Armenian Genocide survivors Barkev and Pergrouhi (Pearl) Javizian. He was the fourth of five children in his family. Simon graduated from Cass Technical High School, where he was actively involved in the symphonic and marching bands.

He pursued higher education in mortuary science at Wayne State University, laying the groundwork for his long career as a funeral director.

Family and Personal Life

Simon met his future wife, Alice (Mamassian) Javizian, at the young age of 20 during an ACYOA dance. The couple married in 1955 and raised two children, Lynn and Semon. Known for his selflessness and kindness, Simon was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, deeply valuing family connections.

Musical Contributions

A talented musician, Simon showcased his skills in various instruments, including the clarinet, piano, saxophone, trumpet, and doumbek. He was a founding member of the Armenian band Ardziv, which significantly influenced the genre across the Midwest.

Community Involvement

Simon was an active participant in the Knights of Vartan for over 65 years, serving as Grand Commander from 1997 to 1999. His leadership involved regular trips to Armenia, where he contributed to the Armenian Schools Service Project (ASSP). Under his guidance, the Avak Tivan lodge raised more than $440,000 for educational initiatives in Armenia.

A dedicated member of St. John Armenian Church of Greater Detroit, Simon was active in various capacities, including the ACYOA, Komitas Choir, and Men’s Society. He also represented his parish as a Diocesan Delegate in the Eastern Diocese of the Armenian Church.

Legacy and Final Arrangements

Simon Javizian is remembered for his storytelling ability and vibrant personality, often turning ordinary tales into captivating narratives. He is survived by his children, Lynn and Semon, his grandchildren Kelsi, Alexander, and Dylan, his brother Garry, and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
