Macaulay Culkin Recalls Filming the Bee Scene
During the podcast, the 45-year-old actor reflected on the unique filming process. He starred alongside Anna Chlumsky, portraying childhood friends Thomas J. and Vada Sultenfuss. In a crucial scene, Thomas is fatally stung by bees, deeply impacting Vada, played by Chlumsky.
Real Bees Were Used on Set
Culkin disclosed that real bees were utilized for authenticity. He described the special preparation:
- The crew applied a scent resembling a queen bee to his fingertips.
- This attracted the bees to his hands, creating a realistic effect for the scene.
The actor noted, “They actually released thousands of bees on me.” He humorously remarked that such practices would likely be prohibited today.
The Challenges of the Scene
Culkin detailed how he was instructed to wave his hands in front of his face to direct the bees for the camera. Despite being told to avoid contact, he still managed to attract one bee that stung him in the neck. He reassured listeners, however, that there was “no venom.”
The filming required four takes, but Culkin emerged from the experience largely unscathed.
Memories of Other Filming Challenges
Culkin also recounted the complexities of filming another scene, where he and Chlumsky jumped into a lake. He described the bizarre safety measures, which included catching poisonous water moccasins.
- These snakes were cut into pieces and used as bait for snapping turtles.
- Snapping turtles were then utilized for alligator bait.
With a chuckle, he noted, “What lake are we jumping into? Jeez, have you ever heard of a swimming pool?”

Culkin’s childhood friendship with Chlumsky made filming enjoyable. He remarked on the special connection between children, stating it allows them to relate better than with adults.
Reflecting on the film’s legacy, Chlumsky explained in 2022 how the movie resonated with viewers. “People would say, ‘My best friend died, and I don’t know what I would have done without that movie,’” she shared.
