Auburn Students Explain Choosing Tigers Over Tide

As the Iron Bowl approaches, the historic rivalry between Auburn University and the University of Alabama continues to captivate fans. This rivalry, which began in 1893, has influenced countless families in Alabama and beyond. With just a few exceptions, the teams have faced each other annually since 1948, after resolving decades-old disputes regarding player expenses and game details.

Auburn vs. Alabama: A Family Divide

The challenge of choosing a side in the rivalry often creates divided households. Many Auburn students, despite their families’ Alabama loyalties, find themselves embracing the Auburn spirit. This is true for Nick Meyers, a sophomore studying hospitality management. Growing up, he was influenced by his mother’s love for Alabama football. “My first words were literally ‘Roll Tide,’” he reminisces. However, his decision to attend Auburn was driven by a desire for a broader educational experience.

Meyers acknowledges Alabama’s dominance in football but believes Auburn excels in other sports and academics. “While football hasn’t lived up to the same standards Alabama has, I think Auburn overall is a much better sports school,” he says. His transition into the Auburn Family, despite initial hesitation, has been complete. He recalls wearing the team’s colors proudly at a game in Tuscaloosa.

Students from Loyal Alabama Families

Others also share stories of switching allegiances. Mary Cecilia Ledbetter, a psychology major, comes from a family steeped in Alabama tradition. Her grandparents are ardent fans, with their home filled with Alabama memorabilia. “My grandparents even have their whole downstairs dedicated to Alabama football,” she notes.

Ledbetter’s journey to Auburn began unexpectedly. “One night, I said, ‘Good night, Daddy. I love you and Roll Tide.’ The next morning, I woke up and said, ‘Good morning, Daddy. I love you. War Eagle,’” she recalls. A campus tour solidified her choice, leading her to appreciate Auburn’s unique blend of a large SEC environment with a close-knit community feel.

The Significance of Auburn Football

No matter their backgrounds, Auburn students find a sense of belonging within the Auburn Family. This camaraderie fosters strong support for the Tigers, despite their family ties to the Tide. The Iron Bowl remains one of the most anticipated games in college football, emphasizing the passion that defines Alabama’s culture.

  • Rivalry Origin: Began in 1893
  • Annual Matches: Played since 1948
  • Auburn Student Perspectives: Many switch allegiance from Alabama

With a vibrant fan base and a commitment to excellence in sports and education, Auburn University continues to thrive. The choice to support the Tigers over the Tide is more than a decision; it is a personal journey for many students.
