Chicago Faces 10 Inches of Snow as Winter Storm Strikes Saturday

Chicago is bracing for a significant snowstorm this Saturday, marking the first substantial snowfall in nearly five years. The National Weather Service (NWS) reports that parts of the city could see up to 10 inches of snow. The snowfall will begin early Saturday morning and intensify throughout the day, dwindling by late Saturday night into Sunday morning.

Winter Storm Warning Issued

A winter storm warning has been placed for the Chicagoland area, valid from 3 a.m. Saturday until 6 a.m. Sunday. Due to hazardous conditions, travel is not recommended during this period. The NWS also advises motorists to keep emergency supplies in their vehicles, including:

  • Flashlight
  • Food
  • Water

Recent Snowfall Records

Saturday’s forecasted snowfall is significant, especially considering that Chicago last experienced a 6-inch snowfall on February 15, 2021. According to NWS data, last winter was one of the least snowy seasons in the city’s history.

  • Only 11.9 inches of snow fell at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport this past winter.
  • This made it the 10th least snowy winter recorded and the driest since 1937.

Upcoming Weather Trends

Although this storm counts as an autumn event, the meteorological winter begins on December 1. After the current snowfall, temperatures are expected to remain below average throughout the following week. There is also a potential for additional snowfall on Monday afternoon.
