Frequent Visitor: Pi the Humpback Whale
The Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust confirmed that Pi has been visiting the islands during winter for several years. This includes sightings in recent seasons, particularly in 2023 and 2024.
A Memorable Experience
Ms. Drazniece, along with her friends, embarked on an adventure to find the whale after hearing about its sightings. They settled near the Daymark, equipped with tea and binoculators, adding to their excitement. Ms. Drazniece utilized her drone to scan the ocean.
- It was a chilly day, but the atmosphere was serene and inviting.
- They observed the waves carefully, looking for signs of the whale.
- After a while, Ms. Drazniece identified two fins cutting through the water.
“It was fantastic,” she shared. “It’s amazing to see him; it’s lovely.”
A Unique Name and Appearance
The name Pi originates from a distinctive marking on the whale’s fin. “We call it Pi because by the hump on the right side, there is a P sign,” explained Ms. Drazniece. This unique characteristic makes Pi easily recognizable.
Increasing Whale Sightings
In addition to Pi, other whales have also been seen in the surrounding waters, with sightings increasing yearly. Residents are hopeful that Pi will perform a flip to reveal its gender, which remains a mystery for now.
The sighting of Pi has brought joy to the Isles of Scilly, reaffirming the importance of maritime conservation and the beauty of wildlife in the region.
