American Conference Honors Two No. 24 Football Players

In a significant recognition, the American Conference honored two players from the No. 24 Tulane football team on November 24. Redshirt freshman kicker Patrick Durkin received the title of Special Teams Player of the Week for the third time this season. In a commanding 37-13 victory against Temple, Durkin scored 17 points through five successful field goals and two extra points.
Patrick Durkin’s Outstanding Performance
Durkin’s five field goals were instrumental in the win, as he connected from distances of 50, 36, 38, 42, and 52 yards. This achievement tied the Tulane school record for field goals in a game. His 52-yard kick is also amongst the longest in school history, ranking as the 10th longest overall. Notably, Durkin’s 17 points exceeded the total score recorded by the Temple team.
- Durkin’s current season statistics include:
- 20-for-21 on field goals (95.2% accuracy)
- Average of 1.82 field goals per game, leading the American Conference and ranking 10th nationally
- 93 total points scored, ranking first among kickers in the league and third in Tulane school history
Jake Retzlaff’s Recognition
Redshirt senior quarterback Jake Retzlaff was also recognized, making the Weekly Honor Roll. In the game against Temple, he accounted for three touchdowns—two passing and one rushing—while recording 231 passing yards. Retzlaff’s rushing touchdown marked the 12th of his season, tying the school record for touchdowns by a quarterback in a single season.
Tulane Team Achievements
The Tulane football team boasts a remarkable 9-2 record this season, including a 6-1 record in conference play. This accomplishment represents the fifth instance in the school’s history where they secured six or more conference victories. Their continued success includes:
- Wins against Power 4 opponents for the first time since 1988
- A total of 14 distinct player honors from the American Conference this season
- Participation in multiple bowl games over recent years, with a 7-10 record historically in bowl appearances
