Four distinguished individuals from the U.S. Army have been awarded the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship for 2026. This scholarship, one of the oldest academic accolades globally, offers full funding for postgraduate studies at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom.
West Point Cadets Recognized
Among the recipients are three cadets from the United States Military Academy at West Point: Max Felter, Johnathan Pinc, and Brandon Tran. This achievement underscores West Point’s tradition of academic prowess and leadership dedication.
Brig. Gen. Shane R. Reeves, Dean of the Academic Board, praised the cadets, stating, “They represent the very best of West Point as leaders of character.” He expressed pride in their contributions to addressing the nation’s challenges.
Tied for First Place in Scholarly Achievement
With three Rhodes Scholars this year, West Point shares the spotlight with esteemed institutions such as Harvard University, Yale University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
About the Recipients
- Max Felter: Hailing from Palo Alto, California, Felter majors in applied statistics and data science. He has interned with military and industry organizations, enhancing Army data analytics using AI. After graduation, he aspires to become an infantry officer.
- Johnathan Pinc: Originating from Medina, Ohio, Pinc studies chemistry and serves as the Third Regiment’s intelligence and public affairs officer. He has presented at multiple conferences and published research on neurodegenerative diseases. He aims to be a cyber officer after graduation.
- Brandon Tran: From Fountain Valley, California, Tran is a double major in international affairs and Chinese. He has worked on Indo-Pacific security matters and holds leadership roles within the Corps of Cadets. After completing his education, Tran plans to become a Military Intelligence Officer.
Army Reserve Scholar
In addition to the West Point cadets, 2nd Lt. Andrew H. Tomusiak, from Washington, D.C., was also selected as a Rhodes Scholar. Tomusiak commissioned from George Washington University’s ROTC program on May 20, 2024, and serves as a military intelligence officer.
With responsibilities leading a platoon engaged in vital human intelligence operations, Tomusiak brings extensive military training, including completion of Army Air Assault School. He is also a program analyst at the U.S. State Department, where his work influences national policy.
At Oxford, he will pursue a graduate degree in Public Policy, aiming to tackle complex global issues. His dual commitment to military service and public policy embodies the citizen-Soldier ethos crucial for assuring national security.
