Kovac Explains Dortmund’s Low Injuries; Beier Ruled Out

In a recent update regarding Borussia Dortmund’s upcoming Champions League match against Villarreal, coach Niko Kovac confirmed that Maximilian Beier will not participate due to a muscle strain. The game is scheduled for Tuesday evening at 9 PM.
Dortmund’s Injury Update for Champions League Match
While Borussia Dortmund faces this slight setback, they are in a much stronger position compared to Bayer Leverkusen. Leverkusen is heading into their away game against Manchester City with numerous key players sidelined due to injuries.
Kovac reported that outside of Beier, the only other player missing for Dortmund will be Niklas Süle, who has been nursing a toe injury for several weeks. In a positive twist, Ramy Bensebaini returns to the squad after missing the last match against VfB Stuttgart due to back issues.
Injury Status of Players
- Maximilian Beier: Out due to a muscle strain.
- Niklas Süle: Out due to a toe injury.
- Ramy Bensebaini: Returning from back pain.
Kovac assured that Beier’s injury is likely not a long-term concern, noting that he performed well in the recent match until his substitution in stoppage time. Kovac emphasized that these minor injuries are part of the sport and manageable.
Reasons for Low Injury Rates
Dortmund’s relatively low injury rate this season is attributed to changes in training methods under Kovac. Team captain Emre Can, who has recently returned from a four-month injury absence, praised the coaching staff for their focus on fitness. He stated that the team has made significant adjustments to their training regimen to ensure players remain in optimal condition.
Kovac noted the importance of educating players on workload management. He said, “We need to sensitize players about why we do certain things,” hinting at strategies for balancing playing time effectively. With seven matches scheduled in the next three and a half weeks before the winter break, he mentioned that depth and rotation are crucial.
Looking Ahead
The coach expressed his intention to rotate players strategically. He stated, “Injuries mean we may have overlooked something. It’s not just about performance; it’s about giving the body necessary rest.” This approach is fundamental as the team prepares to face Villarreal and other challenges ahead.
In lieu of Beier, Kovac may consider players like Julian Brandt or Carney Chukwuemeka to fill the gap. As Dortmund gears up for this crucial match, they remain well-prepared with a strong squad at their disposal.
