Erika Kirk Jokes She’d Face Less Backlash Grabbing JD Vance Than Hugging

Erika Kirk, leader of Turning Point USA (TPUSA) and widow of founder Charlie Kirk, recently responded to backlash regarding her emotional hug with U.S. Vice President JD Vance. During an interview with Megyn Kelly, she remarked that the outrage stemmed more from online culture than the innocent act itself.
Understanding the Hug Controversy
The incident took place on October 29 at the University of Mississippi during a TPUSA event, where Erika delivered a heartfelt tribute to her slain husband. After her speech, she and Vance shared a hug onstage, which quickly went viral.

During the hug, Vance told Erika, “I’m so proud of you,” to which she replied, “God bless you.” She instinctively touched the back of his head, a gesture she later explained is typical for her when hugging. Erika pointed out that critics might have reacted differently had the hug been perceived as more inappropriate.
Erika’s Response to Critics
Laughing, she suggested that those criticizing her need a hug themselves. “Whoever is hating on a hug needs a hug themselves. I will give you a free hug anytime,” she stated. Erika expressed frustration over the bizarre level of scrutiny, remarking, “I feel like I wouldn’t get as much hate if I did that,” while alluding to a more inappropriate gesture.
A Legacy of Leadership
Following her husband’s tragic death, Erika stepped into the leadership role at TPUSA. She emphasized her commitment to honoring his legacy, stating, “It’s what he would have wanted.” Erika also confirmed the organization is considering supporting Vance in a potential presidential run in 2028, saying, “Don’t worry — it’s already in the works.”
“One of the last few conversations we had was how intentional he was about supporting JD for 2028,” she added, underscoring the plans set in motion by her late husband.
