Salford Youth Service and Police Unite to Safeguard Bikes Citywide

In an effort to combat bike theft across the city, Salford Youth Service is collaborating with local police departments in Eccles, Irlam, and Cadishead. This partnership aims to provide free bike maintenance and registration, essential services to protect against theft.
Salford Youth Bike Project
The Salford Youth Bike Project has successfully distributed over 500 bicycles to young individuals in need. This initiative not only promotes mobility but also encourages residents to navigate Salford comfortably.
Free Bike Registration Event
A bike registration event will take place on Thursday, 27 November, at Cadishead Park from 4 PM to 6 PM. Attendees can register their bikes with the only police-approved cycle database available. This registration helps verify the legitimacy of second-hand bikes, reducing the risk of purchasing stolen goods.
Addressing Bike Theft
With over 66,960 reported bike thefts across the UK in 2023/24, bike security has become a pressing concern. In Greater Manchester alone, there were 3,108 bike thefts reported this year, with only 32 resulting in legal charges. A YouGov survey conducted in 2022 revealed that 77% of respondents did not trust law enforcement to investigate bike theft adequately. This figure represents the highest level of distrust among various surveyed crimes.
Community Support and Safety
Supported by local police, the Salford Youth Service project aims to instill confidence in young cyclists to travel safely throughout the city. By offering these services, the initiative hopes to reduce both reported and unreported bike thefts in the Greater Manchester area.
