Kristi Noem Distributes Bonus Checks to MSP TSA Officers, Union Deems “Illegal”

In a recent visit to Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP), U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem distributed substantial bonuses to select TSA officers. This visit marked her second in a month and came as a gesture of gratitude towards those who worked without pay during the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, which lasted for 43 days.
Details of Bonus Distribution
Noem awarded $10,000 bonus checks to 48 TSA officers at MSP Airport. This financial support aims to ease the burdens faced by employees during the shutdown.
Reactions from TSA Employees
- Jonathan Pringle, a TSA officer, expressed gratitude, stating, “Ten thousand dollars is going to help out a lot.”
- Alex Garcia, who has been with TSA for 14 years, mentioned his commitment to public safety, citing his Marine Corps background.
- Steven Grubb highlighted the challenges faced during the shutdown, noting the struggle to cover basic needs due to his long commute.
Union Concerns Over Bonus Checks
Despite the appreciation shown by some employees, the Local 899 Airport Screeners Union raised concerns about the legality and fairness of the bonus distribution. They argue that only 7% of the MSP workforce received these bonuses.
Union Statement
Union treasurer Neal Gosman criticized the award process, stating, “Nearly every TSO showed up consistently to maintain the security of the traveling public during the shutdown. The process of making these awards completely bypassed local management involvement and participation with the union.”
Response from Kristi Noem
When questioned about the limited distribution of the bonuses, Noem explained that the funds were awarded based on staff nominations at the local level. She emphasized that the process aimed to recognize deserving individuals from within their leadership teams.
Union’s Community Support Initiatives
In a show of support for all TSA employees, the Local 899 Airport Screeners Union also announced a contribution of over $2,000 to local food shelves in the Midwest, including Minnesota. This initiative intends to thank TSO employees for their commitment during the challenging period of the government shutdown.
