Pakistanis Leverage Holiday Visa Loophole for Record Asylum Claims

Pakistan has become a focal point for asylum claims, particularly through the utilization of holiday visa loopholes. In 2024, Pakistani nationals made significant strides in securing asylum status, registering 9,783 claims. This figure represents approximately 24% of all visa-to-asylum switches during that year.

Record Asylum Claims by Pakistanis

The surge in asylum claims has positioned Pakistan at the top across various visa categories. Notably, the country led the way in student visa switches, with an impressive 5,888 claims. This total surpasses the combined figures of the second and third-ranked countries, India and Bangladesh, which recorded 2,295 and 2,374 claims, respectively.

Visitor and Work Visa Asylum Claims

In addition to student visas, Pakistan ranked second for visitor visa holders seeking asylum. There were 902 claims, just behind China, which recorded 1,094 claims. For work visas, Pakistan also claimed the second spot with 2,578 asylum requests, trailing behind Bangladesh, which had 3,268.

  • Percentage of all asylum applications accounted for by Pakistanis: 10%
