Virginia Tech Bond Strengthens Norfolk State Sideline Unity

Michael Vick’s inaugural season as head coach for Norfolk State is marked by a profound reunion with his former Virginia Tech teammate, Andre Kendrick. This connection stems from a nearly 30-year friendship that began in Blacksburg, Virginia. Now, they find themselves alongside each other on the sidelines, fostering a legacy of brotherhood.

Brotherhood Revisited

During their college years, Vick was the starting quarterback, while Kendrick played as a running back. Their synergy propelled the Hokies to an impressive 11-0 record in the 1999 season, culminating in an appearance at the 2000 Sugar Bowl. This was Virginia Tech’s first undefeated regular season since 1918.

Their bond continued off the field. Kendrick’s family frequently hosted Vick, while he reciprocated by supporting Kendrick’s children, including his son DreSean. “Since our meeting nearly three decades ago, we have remained connected, like family,” said Kendrick.

Coaching Journey Begins

Vick’s decision to pursue coaching began when he reached out frequently to Kendrick about the head coaching role at Norfolk State. His enthusiasm culminated in Kendrick being appointed as the running backs coach, alongside his son DreSean joining the team as a wide receiver.

A New Chapter at Norfolk State

  • Record: 1-10 overall this season.
  • Conference: 0-4 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
  • Player Stats: DreSean Kendrick recorded 52 receptions for 648 yards and five touchdowns in his first season.

Coaching is uncharted territory for both Vick and Kendrick, but mentorship has driven their careers. The duo has operated the V7 Football Experience, a youth football camp, since 2011. Vick noted, “Having my own team is something I always desired, and I’m grateful for the opportunity.”

Cultural Significance of HBCU Coaching

Coaching at Norfolk State, an HBCU, holds significant meaning for Kendrick. “I get to embrace our culture and traditions, which is invaluable,” he stated. Together, they have focused on mentoring players both on and off the field.

DreSean Kendrick’s Performance

DreSean has flourished as a player under his father’s guidance. He ended his last season at William & Mary with 16 receptions for 223 yards but has significantly upped his game with Norfolk State. Vick describes him as a dynamic player with great potential.

Generational Coaching Bond

Watching Andre coach his son has been a rewarding experience for both coaches. Vick acknowledges the unique sentiment that comes with familial coaching. “The relationship he shares with DreSean is special,” Vick commented, believing DreSean has the potential to progress to the next level in football.

Reflections on College Football’s Evolution

As they reminisce about their time at Virginia Tech, both Vick and Kendrick recognize the differences in today’s college football landscape. The emergence of NIL deals and the NCAA transfer portal has transformed the game since their playing days.

A Story of Loyalty and Perseverance

This chapter in Vick and Kendrick’s lives encapsulates loyalty that transcends generations. “We are grateful for this moment together,” Vick remarked. Their journey reflects not only personal growth but also a steadfast commitment to nurturing the next generation of athletes at Norfolk State.
