REM Train Collision on Montreal’s South Shore: 1 Dead, 2 Critically Injured

On Saturday, a tragic incident involving a REM train occurred on Montreal’s South Shore, leading to one death and two injuries. Longueuil police reported that they received a distress call around 3:10 a.m., even though no trains were scheduled to operate at that time.
Details of the Incident
According to provincial police, three young men were struck by the train near the Du Quartier station. The victims included:
- A 19-year-old who was pronounced dead at the scene.
- A 22-year-old who sustained serious injuries and remains in critical condition.
- A second 19-year-old who has since stabilized and is no longer in danger.
The REM’s communications department indicated that the event was linked to an “intrusion onto the tracks.” This prompted an emergency response that suspended train services between Brossard and Panama stations.
Response and Investigation
Emergency services quickly established a shuttle service to accommodate affected passengers. According to Sûreté du Québec spokesperson Sgt. Ève Brochu-Joubert, a group of individuals attempted to cross both Highway 10 and the REM tracks in an effort to reach the other side. Eyewitness reports suggest they continued to walk despite the approaching train.
Currently, Sûreté du Québec investigators are on-site to determine the exact circumstances surrounding this fatal train collision.
