Cabot Circus Cinema Update: Two Years Since Showcase Closure

The Showcase Cinema de Lux at Cabot Circus permanently closed on November 30, 2023. This closure marked the end of an era for Bristol’s largest cinema and was considered a major loss for the city center. The cinema had been a key attraction since the shopping center’s opening in 2008.
Impact of Closure on Cabot Circus
With the closure of the 14-screen cinema, which was one of the biggest draws for visitors, Cabot Circus experienced a significant void. The situation was compounded by the subsequent closure of House of Fraser just nine months later, leaving a noticeable impact on the shopping center’s appeal.
New Developments and Future Plans
In the wake of the cinema’s closure, Odeon Cinemas announced plans to occupy the vacant space at Cabot Circus. The new Odeon Luxe cinema is scheduled to open in early 2026. This cinema promises a premium experience with reclining seats, enhanced legroom, IMAX with Laser, and iSense screen technology for superior sound and picture quality.
Renovations and Community Response
Cabot Circus recently received community feedback expressing a strong desire for a cinema. In response, the shopping center confirmed the arrival of Odeon Luxe, stating, “Bristol, we hear you.” The new cinema will occupy a smaller footprint than its predecessor and will share space with a restaurant and another leisure operator, although their identities remain undisclosed.
Delays in Cinema Opening
Originally intended to open in 2023, the initiation of the Odeon Luxe was delayed by Hammerson’s plans for a 500-bed student accommodation tower situated near the center’s car park. This development is part of a broader regeneration effort for Cabot Circus and surrounding areas.
Broader Regeneration Plans
- New Marks & Spencer store opened after 18 months of anticipation.
- Plans for a large health center in the Quakers Friars area.
- Potential redevelopment of the Apple Store site on Philadelphia Street.
The upcoming changes signify extensive revitalization efforts aimed at enhancing Cabot Circus’s appeal as a central hub for shopping and entertainment in Bristol.
