JCPS Proposes School Closures, Relocations to Address $188 Million Budget Deficit

Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) is facing a significant financial challenge, with a budget deficit of $188 million. In response to this shortfall, Superintendent Brian Yearwood has put forth a series of proposals aimed at reducing costs and reallocating resources.

Proposed Changes to Schools

The recommendations announced by JCPS include closures, relocations, and consolidations of certain schools. Each proposal has specific reasoning tied to financial and operational efficiency.

School Closures

  • Liberty High School: This school, intended for credit recovery, is deemed unnecessary as resources are now available across the district. If approved, students will transition back to their home schools, supported by Personal Learning Plans.
  • Zachary Taylor Elementary School: With an enrollment below 50%, this school faces closure as well. Students will need to reapply to nearby elementary schools, and the building may be sold if the closure is finalized.

Relocations and Consolidations

  • Waller-Williams Environmental School: This school’s relocation to a facility in Fairdale is proposed due to low capacity (39%) and a high cost per student ($111,000). The existing building will be demolished.
  • Maupin and King Elementary Schools: A consolidation proposal would merge these two schools at the Maupin facility. King has a higher cost per student, while Maupin operates at a more cost-effective rate.

Georgia Chaffee Teenage Parent Program Move

The Georgia Chaffee Teenage Parent Program is also slated to move to the Gheens Early Childhood Center. This decision is driven by low enrollment (21%) and a high average cost per student.

Community Response and Next Steps

The proposals have prompted concerns, particularly regarding community involvement in the decision-making process. Melissa Brooks, a retired teacher from Liberty, expressed disappointment in the lack of communication from the district, suggesting that the voices of those most affected were not considered.

School board member Taylor Everett acknowledged the need for clarity and community input. He highlighted the importance of upcoming public forums scheduled for December 1-3, where citizens can discuss the proposals and share their perspectives.

Future Financial Outlook

JCPS anticipates further budget cuts exceeding $130 million in the upcoming fiscal year. Despite the current budget challenges, the district maintains a strong financial position with an operating budget of approximately $2.4 billion.

As scrutinies over the budget continue, JCPS will hold a news conference to elaborate on the proposed changes. The Jefferson County Board of Education will vote on these recommendations at their meeting on December 9.
