Lobos Travel to Kansas City for Hall of Fame Classic

The New Mexico Lobos men’s basketball team is set to travel to Kansas City this week for the prestigious Hall of Fame Classic. This tournament presents a significant opportunity for the Lobos to showcase their talent and potentially improve their season standing.

Lobos’ Tournament Schedule

The Lobos will kick off the tournament with a match against Nebraska on Thursday at 5:00 PM MT. Following this, they will either compete against Kansas State or Mississippi State in the championship or consolation game on Friday at the T-Mobile Center. Both games will be broadcast live on NBCSN, Peacock, and the Lobo Radio Network.

Current Team Performance

  • The Lobos currently hold a 3-1 record.
  • They are eager to bounce back after a recent loss to New Mexico State in their road opener.
  • Unique to their team, New Mexico features two freshmen averaging double-figure scoring, including Tomislav Buljan, who ranks among six freshmen nationwide averaging a double-double.

Nebraska’s Strong Start

Nebraska enters the tournament with an impressive 4-0 record. They have the longest active winning streak in the nation at eight games, having concluded last season with a title at the inaugural College Basketball Crown. The Cornhuskers are spearheaded by Pryce Sandfort, boasting an average of 17.5 points per game.

Historical Context

The Lobos have faced Nebraska once before, achieving an 83-71 victory at The Pit during the first round of the 2009 NIT. This tournament marks New Mexico’s second visit to Kansas City. In the 2013-14 season, they encountered No. 13 Kansas, where they were defeated 80-63 at the T-Mobile Center, previously known as the Sprint Center.

Potential Opponents

On Friday, the Lobos will either take on Kansas State or Mississippi State. The Lobos last competed against Kansas State in the 2006-07 season, splitting the two encounters. In contrast, New Mexico has never faced Mississippi State.

Upcoming Home Games

After the Hall of Fame Classic, the Lobos will return home to embark on a three-game homestand at The Pit, starting with a match against Alabama State on Wednesday, November 26. This series of games presents an excellent opportunity for the Lobos to solidify their season and build momentum as they head deeper into their schedule.
