Giants Bench Abdul Carter for Missing Team Walk-Through: Sources

New York Giants rookie linebacker Abdul Carter was benched for the first series of the team’s 27-20 loss to the Green Bay Packers. This disciplinary action was due to Carter missing a scheduled walk-through prior to the game. Team sources revealed that he was asleep at the facility during this critical preparation.

Disciplinary Actions and Team Impact

Interim coach Mike Kafka decided to bench Carter, marking a shift in the team’s response to discipline this season. Former coach Brian Daboll had previously overlooked similar tardiness issues during Carter’s rookie year. After the game, Carter acknowledged his mistake, stating, “I made a mistake during the week that was detrimental to the team.”

The punishment affected Carter’s playtime as he was sidelined during the Packers’ six-play opening drive. Despite this, he participated in every snap after that. Carter managed to record two pressures, one tackle, and one quarterback hit throughout the game.

Rookie Season Overview

Carter’s rookie season has been challenging. With just half a sack over the first 11 games and having 2.5 potential sacks nullified by penalties, his impact has not matched expectations. Despite the statistics, he has demonstrated disruptive potential, ranking 26th in the NFL with 35 pressures.

Notably, Carter’s absence during the opening drive was significant, particularly with Kayvon Thibodeaux injured and unable to play. Carter’s role on the team continues to evolve as he navigates his first year in the NFL.
