Body of 7-Year-Old Girl Recovered from Sea Near Big Sur Coast

The tragic incident off the Big Sur coast has captured widespread attention following the recovery of a 7-year-old girl’s body. This discovery came after a heartbreaking search and rescue operation that followed her disappearance in the ocean.
Details of the Incident
On Friday, the young girl and her family were visiting Garrapata Beach. While there, she was swept into the rough waters due to powerful waves estimated at 15 to 20 feet high. The waves were attributed to strong winds of up to 70 mph from a storm affecting the region.
Her father, 39-year-old Yuji Hu from Calgary, Canada, bravely attempted to save her but tragically lost his life in the process. He was later recovered from the water by two individuals: a fellow beachgoer and an off-duty California State Parks officer. Despite immediate medical attention, he was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Search and Recovery Efforts
The search for the girl resumed on Saturday morning but was ultimately suspended after officials determined her whereabouts. A diver located her body around 1:20 p.m. on Sunday, approximately 100 yards offshore and half a mile from where she was last seen.
Injuries and Involvement of Family Members
- The girl’s mother also entered the water to help but managed to return safely.
- She was treated for mild hypothermia at a local hospital.
- A 2-year-old sibling was present and unharmed during the incident.
Community Response and Safety Concerns
This incident prompted a significant joint operation involving the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, various state agencies, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Despite thorough efforts, the search concluded after an exhaustive day of searching the shoreline.
Officials have requested privacy for the family during this difficult time, as they cope with the loss of their beloved members.
