Hempfield Alum Jasmine Jones Pursues Bobsled and 2026 Winter Olympics

Jasmine Jones, a Hempfield graduate, is setting her sights on competing in the 2026 Winter Olympics in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy. Her journey began when the two-woman bobsled World Cup season kicks off on November 23 in the same Italian town.
Olympic Aspirations
The United States Bobsled and Skeleton Federation will be evaluating athletes for a two-month period. On January 19, the Olympic team will be announced. Jones, who turned 29 in September, expressed her confidence, saying, “I feel like, for me, I just remember the training I went through and trust that. I’m excited for it, especially that type of environment. I thrive off that.”
From Track to Bobsled
Before transitioning to bobsledding in late 2018, Jones excelled in track and field. While at Eastern Michigan University, she was part of the Mid-American Conference champion 400-meter relay team. She not only won gold in multiple events but also earned recognition as the MAC indoor most outstanding performer.
- Track & Field Achievements:
- MAC outdoor gold in the 400 relay, 200, and 400.
- MAC indoor gold in the 200 and 400.
Influences and Challenges
Jones was encouraged to try bobsledding by five-time Olympic medalist Elana Meyers Taylor. After joining the national team in 2019, she aimed for the 2022 Beijing Winter Games but faced setbacks, including the COVID-19 pandemic and impending motherhood.
After giving birth to her daughter, Jade, Jones returned to training just four months later. Balancing life with a newborn and a demanding training schedule presented numerous challenges. She said, “It was a lot going on.” Nevertheless, her determination remained intact.
Support System in Place
In 2023, Jones joined the Air Force World Class Athlete Program, allowing her to train in Lake Placid, New York. This program also helps with childcare for Jade, as her mother lives with them and fellow athletes participate in supporting her daughter.
Training and Competitions
Confidence in earning an Olympic spot stems from her recent training. As a brakeman in the two-woman competition, Jones ensures everything is set for a successful run. In the recent push championships, she showcased her abilities, winning the U.S. women’s brakeman competition in September with a time of 11.112 seconds.
- Recent Achievements:
- Won three bronze medals in World Cup competitions over the past two years.
Looking Ahead to Cortina
As the World Cup season progresses, Jones will pair with various pilots to determine the most effective duos. Regardless of her partner, she understands the significance of trust and teamwork in bobsledding.
As she prepares for the intense competition in Cortina, Jones reflects on the similarities between sprinting and bobsledding. The adrenaline rush is comparable, especially during the initial push off. She is hopeful about her Olympic chances and eager to elevate her experience in the bobsledding realm.
