Trump Criticizes Indiana Lawmakers for Halting Redistricting Efforts

Former President Donald Trump has expressed strong disapproval toward Indiana Republican lawmakers for not advancing redistricting initiatives. In a recent post on Truth Social, Trump directed his criticism specifically at Senate President Pro Tempore Rodric Bray and state Senator Greg Goode.
Trump’s Disappointment with Indiana Lawmakers
Trump voiced that he is “very disappointed in Indiana State Senate Republicans.” He warned that due to their inaction, they risk jeopardizing Republican representation in the House. “Because of these two politically correct type ‘gentlemen,’ and a few others, they could be depriving Republicans of a Majority in the House, A VERY BIG DEAL!” Trump stated.
Redistricting Turmoil in Indiana
Indiana finds itself among various states currently contending with redistricting matters. This urgency follows a mid-decade redistricting push initiated by Texas, triggering similar efforts nationwide. Political figures from both parties are aiming to revise congressional boundaries to benefit their candidates ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.
Earlier this month, California voters approved a redistricting measure put forth by Governor Gavin Newsom, designed to counter Texas’ newly drawn maps.
Calls for Republican Accountability
In his post, Trump called for primary challenges against Republicans who oppose redistricting. He urged Indiana lawmakers to fulfill their responsibilities or face removal from office. A spokesperson for Senator Goode indicated that Goode would refrain from taking a public stance until an official map and legislation become available for review.
Current Status of Redistricting Efforts
Bray, the leader of the state GOP Senate, revealed that there is insufficient support within the chamber to advance redistricting. In a statement, he explained, “Over the last several months, Senate Republicans have given very serious and thoughtful consideration to the concept of redrawing our state’s congressional maps. Today, I’m announcing there are not enough votes to move that idea forward, and the Senate will not reconvene in December.”
This announcement comes amid mounting pressure from Trump’s administration to position Indiana as a leader in enacting new congressional maps favoring Republican candidates during the midterms. Trump has been instrumental in encouraging legislators, with Vice President JD Vance also visiting Indiana to discuss redistricting efforts.
Further Criticism of Indiana Leaders
Trump targeted GOP Governor Mike Braun, suggesting he is not adequately working to gather the necessary support for redistricting. Braun had previously called for a special legislative session in October to contemplate redistricting. Just days ago, he reiterated his calls, stating, “Our state senators need to do the right thing and show up to vote for fair maps.”
As conversations surrounding redistricting in Indiana continue, both Braun and Bray have not responded to requests for further comments regarding the issue.
