Abakaliki FC Suspends Coach Ifeanyi Onyedika; Ani Takes Charge

In a recent development, Abakaliki FC has taken decisive action by suspending head coach Ifeanyi Onyedika. This decision follows a disappointing 1–1 draw against Rovers FC in their season opener for the 2025/2026 Nigeria National League (NNL). The club’s chairman, Senator Obinna Ogba, announced the suspension shortly after the match at Pa Ngele Oruta Stadium.
Reason for Suspension
Chairman Ogba indicated that the management aims to “restore discipline, inject renewed energy, and set the tone for a more competitive campaign.” The club is keen on addressing its performance to ensure better outcomes in future matches.
Interim Appointment
In response to Onyedika’s suspension, assistant coach Star Plus Aniesta, known as Star Plus Ani, has been appointed as the interim head coach. He is now tasked with assuming full technical responsibilities immediately.
Commitment to Improvement
Senator Ogba reassured fans of Abakaliki FC’s commitment to improving the team’s performance. “We are determined to ensure Abakaliki FC competes better in the coming fixtures,” he stated, highlighting their intention to strengthen the squad for future contests.
Government Reaction
The Ebonyi State Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Hon. Richard Ugo-Idike, expressed his dissatisfaction with the team’s performance and coaching strategies. He criticized Onyedika’s lack of motivation on the sidelines, stating, “I’m not impressed at all. There was no motivation for the players.”
While acknowledging the players’ efforts, Ugo-Idike emphasized the need for better motivation moving forward, indicating that neither players nor officials would be indulged in future lackluster performances.
Star Plus Ani’s Outlook
Upon his interim appointment, Star Plus Ani conveyed mixed emotions. He stated, “This is not a job I am celebrating because [Onyedika] is like a father to me.” Despite his respect for the former coach, Ani reaffirmed the club’s commitment to their goal of reaching the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).
An enthusiastic Ani assured fans of a renewed focus: “We made a promise to the people of Ebonyi State—to take Abakaliki FC to the NPFL—and that ambition has not changed.” He is dedicated to working towards this goal as he leads the team to strive for promotion.
