Toronto Winter Village Website Taken Down After Police Complaint

A recent incident involving a popular winter attraction in Toronto has drawn attention due to the removal of a fraudulent website. The Distillery District Winter Village is known for its festive transformation that attracts tourists and locals alike during the holiday season. However, a fake website was reportedly capitalizing on its popularity.
Distillery District Winter Village Faces Fraudulent Website
The Distillery District Winter Village has declared victory in its efforts to have a fake website taken offline. This website falsely claimed to be the official online presence for the widely acclaimed Christmas festival. The site was confusing visitors and allegedly attempting to exploit their interest.
Visitor Statistics
- Approximately one million people visited the winter village last year.
- The organizers expect similar attendance this holiday season.
Details of the Fraudulent Site
The fake website was titled “The Toronto Christmas Market | Official Website.” It misled users by referencing events in the Distillery District and falsely claiming to sell tickets. Upon closer inspection, visitors found links to online gambling, rather than the expected ticket purchasing options.
Rik Ocvirk, the director of experiences at the Distillery Historic District, voiced concerns about the fraudulent activity. He emphasized the need for visitors to remain vigilant when dealing with online information. Ocvirk stated, “There’s a fraudulent website that’s been around for at least a year that I know of. It’s not ours; ours is thedistillerywintervillage.com.”
Efforts Leading to Removal
After considerable media attention, the misleading site was reportedly taken down. The Distillery District team had been actively working to identify its host and had lodged complaints with the police and the domain host. The efforts paid off, as the site was inaccessible by Friday morning.
Despite the positive outcome, the Distillery District continues to warn prospective visitors to be cautious. They should ensure they are purchasing tickets from the correct and official website.
