Maryland football is facing significant challenges as freshman quarterback Malik Washington leads the team. Despite being sacked only twice this season, Washington is under immense pressure. He tops the Big Ten in passing attempts, compensating for a struggling defense that allows approximately 30 points per game during conference play.
Malik Washington’s Performance
Washington’s contributions are crucial to the Terps’ offense. He accounts for over 73% of the team’s total passing and rushing yards, with 2,319 yards out of a combined 3,146. This statistic highlights his pivotal role among all starting quarterbacks in the Big Ten.
Struggles with Running Game
- Maryland’s running game averages only 3.4 yards per carry.
- Of nearly 70 first-down runs, only four gained double-digit yardage.
- Five rushing plays resulted in negative yards.
These difficulties put Washington in many third-and-long situations. Maryland has only converted 10 out of 40 third-down attempts when facing seven or more yards. Their highest conversion rate was 50% against UCLA, while the lowest fell to 12.5% against Rutgers.
Team’s Offensive Challenges
The Terps’ offensive inefficiency is apparent. During the loss to Rutgers, which ended 35-20, Washington completed just 98 passing yards. This performance came after he made history as one of three true freshman quarterbacks in the Power Conference to throw for at least 200 yards in his first eight games.
Receiving Woes
- Maryland’s receivers have a 7.2% drop rate, ranking among the worst in collegiate power conferences.
- Shaleak Knotts, the leading receiver, had only 13 yards against Rutgers.
- Octavian Smith Jr. struggled with only 134 receiving yards over the last five games.
If the Terps do not improve their receiving corps, Washington may continue to face challenges in leading productive drives.
Defensive Issues and Mental Strain
Maryland’s defense is also suffering, conceding 72 points in the fourth quarter across six conference games. This includes a crucial late-game drive by UCLA that allowed them to tie the game after Washington had just scored a touchdown.
Washington expressed that adjusting to losses has been difficult. His previous success in high school, where he recorded a 33-3 record, contrasts sharply with his current challenges at Maryland. “Now I just have to learn how to deal with losses and be able to come back from it stronger,” he stated.
