Willie Green, who had a tenure of over four seasons with the Pelicans, was dismissed after facing mounting pressure due to the team’s consistent struggles. Under his guidance, New Orleans recorded a 150-190 win-loss record. Although the Pelicans made the playoffs twice, they were eliminated in the first round on both occasions—in 2022 by Phoenix and in 2024 by Oklahoma City.
Team Owner’s Perspective
Team owner Gayle Benson expressed her admiration for Green, recognizing his contributions to the franchise. However, she also stated her trust in the direction outlined by executive vice president of basketball operations Joe Dumars. “This is a tough business and these are difficult decisions,” Benson remarked, highlighting the challenges that come with team management.
Introducing Interim Coach James Borrego
James Borrego assumes the role of interim coach after previously serving four seasons as head coach of the Charlotte Hornets, where he recorded a 138-163 record. Borrego’s interim tenure with the Orlando Magic in the 2014-15 season adds to his experience in the role. Dumars expressed confidence in Borrego’s capabilities to lead the team moving forward.

Taking over with 70 games left in the regular season, Borrego acknowledged the need for improvement. He stated, “We need to be a more resilient, tough physical group.” His immediate focus is to revitalize the struggling team, which has faced difficulties partly due to the injuries of star forward Zion Williamson.
Injury Impact on Team Performance
- Zion Williamson, the 2019 first overall draft pick, has played only 134 of the 340 regular-season games under Green.
- This season, he has already missed seven games due to a bruised foot and a strained left hamstring.
Dumars had retained Green for the start of this season but decided a change was necessary after a disappointing start. The Pelicans opened the season with a six-game losing streak, including several heavy defeats. Green briefly sparked hope with two consecutive wins but failed to maintain momentum, culminating in a recent loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.

While the Pelicans are under new leadership with Borrego, he is expected to assess the team and consider adjustments to the lineup. This includes potentially integrating rookie Derik Queen, who has surpassed expectations early in the season.
